FAQ
NEED TO KNOW
What is this game?
Are You the One is a short-term, invite-only game based off the hit MTV reality dating show, "Are You the One?" There is a set number of contestants (somewhere between 14-16). Over the course of four weeks, contestants must find their destined partner, selected by a complex matchmaking algorithm (actually selected by means of a survey submitted with your application). By the end of every week, the group will submit who they believe these perfect pairs are. Should all pairs be correct by the first week, everyone will have a wish granted. However, for each week that all the pairs are wrong or a new perfect match hasn't been confirmed, one random contestant will lose the right to have their wish granted.
This game is stacked against them! There are no writing implements in the house for them to use to try to sketch out pairings, and so all they have is their brains and the bonds they make.
However, there is hope! And that hope is called the Truth Booth!
What the hell is the Truth Booth?
The Truth Booth looks like a harmless and adorable little seaside cove outside of the villa. Every Thursday, the group can vote to send one couple into the Truth Booth to test their compatibility. On Friday the chosen couple will enter the Truth Booth and learn the results. In other words, it's a surefire way to verify whether the couple is a perfect match or not.
So how will selecting your match actually work at the ceremony?
Due to timezones and people just understandably not being able to be around for a chunk of time to do the selecting live, here's how it'll work for this game:
- After the Truth Booth on Friday, characters will be given a top level to discuss who they think everyone should match up with.
- On Saturday, half of the characters will be chosen to be the ones doing the selecting. The next week, the other half will get to choose.
- Each of those characters submits here who they will actually be deciding to match up with. They will be choosing their top three choices, with IC reasoning. They are welcome to pick someone who the group didn't decide on for them! Feel free to go rogue ICly!
- In cases of overlap of pairs being picked, I'll be picking a few based on funniness/chance of IC drama myself as the mod.
Then later that day, there will be the proper reveal ceremony, and characters can react to the pairs chosen live! Please remember that while the pairs will be announced, the Overseer will only tell you how many pairs were correctly chosen, not which.
What happens if I find my perfect match?
Congratulations to the happy couple! You will now be moving out of the house you shared with all those people and into a lavish honeymoon suite, complete with all the amenities! You may enjoy your newfound privacy and bask in the knowledge that you did not Fuck It Up.
What if I don't like my perfect match in THAT way?
Welp! You still get a honeymoon suite! But I fully encourage you to ship with whoever the heck you want. Your perfect match is a bodacious blonde bombshell but you're more into that sexy immortal with the perpetual resting bitch face? Go for it! Create all the drama!! This is reality TV, babey!
Are we allowed to ship or date outside of our perfect matches?
If you don't do that, I, personally, will be deeply disappointed--so yes, please go wild. Again, this is meant to mimic reality TV. The more IC drama, the better--so also please keep that in mind when signing up! It may be that your perfect match is already macking on someone else ICly--if you think you might take that personally, this is probably not the game for you.
What happens if we guess everything wrong for the perfect matches/don't find a new perfect match that week?
The game continues, of course! But also one randomly selected contestant will lose their right to make a wish. No one will know who that is until the end of the game, so it's in your best interests to find all the perfect matches as quickly as possible!
There is hope, though! So long as at least one perfect match is found, no wishes will be lost that week.
How do we find the perfect matches?
How else do you find your true love? Go on dates! Spend time together! There will be mini, CR focused events to encourage bonding, so mingle with as many people as you can and see what clicks!
There will also be weekly lore drops about your character to help facilitate understanding for the characters who might be a bit cagier about their backstories.
I'm still confused about how AYTO works.
Pop down below for the mechanics, then! It's easier than it seems, promise.
What does the living situation look like?
Contestants will all be living in one big house with a spacious kitchen, dining room, hammocks, and even bigger common room with a ton of comfy couches to get close on. They will also be sharing the same bedroom, though there are separate bathrooms. If you want to snuggle on one of the many couches in the main area though, or be a lone wolf and sleep under a table, feel free.
The house is tucked away on a private beach in an undetermined location. Your characters are welcome to go on fun shopping trips and the like, but they will unfortunately be filmed the whole way, and may end up with a whole group taking a field trip with them.
Can we bang?
You're all adults, sure. Don't forget the cameras, though. They're everywhere, at every angle... especially in the Chuu-Chuu Chamber, which has renamed (forcefully) by the Overseer because "Boom Boom Room" sounded tacky. Characters may engage in simple kissing to more, and so long as they stay handsy they can stay in the room! Otherwise, they'll be booted out regardless of their state and have a nice walk of shame for all to see. The only other place they'll have a modicum of privacy for their intimate escapades will be the Honeymoon Suite, reserved for those who've been tried at the Truth Booth and confirmed as Perfect Matches.
If anything starts on the comm itself, please bring it to one of your journals! That's just common courtesy.
Will there be more chances for private conversations?
For the most part, no. Everything will be on the community, so all participants can witness the sparks fly and be well-informed enough to be able to decide who to submit as the perfect matches by the end of the week. The only exception is for dates (to be expanded upon later), the Chuu-Chuu Chamber, and perfect matches that have officially been locked in. Honeymoon suite PCs will be allowed. No voyeurs!
What kind of character can I play here?
There are three requirements: Firstly, the character must be over the age of 20. There is no max cap. Next, they must have been burned by love before -- rejected, dumped, forever unrequited, "so long as my beloved is happy", cucked, so on; if you have any questions pertaining to this point feel free to ask. Lastly, they must have decided to come here on their own, no being forced or kidnapped. Whether it's because they want to find true love or just really want their wish granted, either is valid, but they must be willing to interact with the dating game as a whole. CRAU will be accepted for the purposes of this round, so if your character lost out on love in another RP game barring AYTO itself feel free to app them! It'll be funsies.
This is extremely important to making sure that this style of game works, so please bring a character who will sincerely engage with the conceit of the game!
Does sexual preference matter?
Nope! Gay, straight, bi, pan, ace, anyone is welcome!
Is there a cast cap?
There is a cast cap of 2 and a player cap of 14ish, though I'll probably bump this up depending on interest. Original characters are allowed and aren't subject to the same cast cap unless they come from the same universe.
Can my character bring their pet/living companion thing?
Absolutely. The Overseer loves animals, after all.
Who is the Overseer anyway?
This lovely lady, you're welcome.
Will characters still have any canon powers?
Yes, barring mind-reading and world-ending powers. Please keep in mind the Overseer's boyfriend will also step in if any actual killing is attempted, and no acts of violence will be permitted against the Overseer. Utilize your powers to have a good time, and just be reasonable with them!
Can I stop these cameras from filming everything I do?
No, it's in the contract you signed to get here. If you menace the cameramen, you'll get put into time out and it will be embarrassing for you (so by all means, do so if you want to). That said, the Overseer can step in if there's something deeply upsetting going on (she's been allowed the privacy before, so she'll give it to others) but don't count on it to stop those cameras from capturing everything you do.
Can I date the Overseer?
Nope!!!!! She is a lovely, faithfully taken woman!!! That's why she's here as your Overseer -- because you losers need all the help you can get!!!
THE SCHEDULE
So what can I expect?
Easy, breezy, covergirl. Let's begin!
Sunday will be the day the Overseer speaks with your character about the happenings of the week prior, so get your gossip gabs going!
Monday is when the big mingle log goes up. Use this for everything and anything! Wanna throw a party? Do it here! Live-react to Truth Booths, ignore the world, and get to know one another!
Wednesday is our big event day. Each week, something special will happen on this day to ensure the continued progression of the game in some fashion -- secrets spilling, CR building, all that good stuff. Bingo's a fave.
Friday is when the Truth Booth happens. OOCly, you have all week to submit your choices here, but this'll be the IC date everyone's looking forward to/dreading! Characters will submit the names of the peers they'd like to test and the pair who gets majority is sent along a seashell-laden path down to a not-so-tucked-away cove to see if they're a Perfect Match or not. That same day, a top level will be posted for characters to discuss who'll they'll be picking for the Match Ceremony the following evening.
Saturday! The most exciting day of the week! The Match Ceremony'll be held then, happening in real time ICly--characters will step up to the plate and call out whoever they've chosen as their match from the remaining, as long as they haven't been snapped up first. Both ways. OOCly, this is done via submitting your characters' picks here to help with time differences and the like, with the first person as their top pick and the other two as their back ups in that order. Half of the characters will go one week, and the other half will go the next.
The outcome of the ceremony is also posted then, in real time, for all that delicious drama! Bit by bit, because suspense is sexy. Just like this.
And then it repeats! Until everyone's found their matches or the game ends.
HOW TO AYTO
After the match-up ceremony, will they know what perfect matches they found?
Nope! They will only know how many. This will be represented by lights that are lit up for each perfect match that they found. As to what character duos those lights represent, well... that's what you have to find out!
How do we lose a wish?
You can only lose a wish if you encounter a blackout. This occurs if no perfect matches are found at all (so named because no lights will be lit), or if you already found a perfect match via the truth booth and don't find any other new ones. So if your TB that week turned up a brand new match, you're safe! If it didn't... You'd better hope the match ceremony does.
Won't it be kind of easy to figure it out if the cast is so small?
You... would be surprised!!!!!!! Do respect the spirit of the game, though -- figuring out the perfect matches is lots of fun and I encourage all IC discussion about it, but this isn't a game where the whole point is to win! It's a game for having a good time with stupid shippy nonsense and outrageous shenanigans. Please remember your characters' handicaps: there are no writing implements to be found anywhere and they will be confiscated if characters bring them back in. They have to figure out the math of the matches in their head or via pretending characters are peeps. Likewise, don't be afraid to (ICly) cause drama for the sake of drama! Don't let fears of "losing" stop you from doing what will be IC and fun.
How do I use the Chuu-Chuu Chamber?
Every week there will be a toplevel that you can reply to. Just say who's going in there with you and I'll set up a private log for you guys that will be unlocked when the game is over! No, comments are not screened. Yes, people can see you two go into the Chuu-Chuu Chamber. That's the risk you take.
How do dates work now that the competitions have been taken out?
You'll be able to request them, just like the Chuu-Chuu Chamber, on a top level posted on the mingle log! I'll whip up something nice.
